Weekends were for family.

A colleague who knew I had a room to let asked me to take in his cousin, a young American woman who turned out to be schizophrenic. It was an eerie experience. As I arrived home from the office one day, my new lodger ran to me and said, ‘I have raped your daughter.’ An alarming moment, even though it was her fantasy – I had young daughters and did not want anyone fantasizing about them. The unfortunate lodger became still more disturbed and a few days later had to be taken away in an ambulance. I lived pretty levelly most of the time but occasionally wished I had someone to advise or reassure me. Driving home alone late after a dinner party on a frosty night, my car went into a spectacular skid as I speeded past the Zoo. It turned right round on itself and I ended up facing in the other direction. By great good fortune there were no other cars on the road. I was shaken and arrived home wanting to tell someone what had happened – Nick came into my mind, ridiculously. At least I had learnt not to speed.
